If the Music won't come to you - Go to the Music

Bands and Musicians tour the Country and the World and play different Cities all the time. Fans typically see Shows around their hometowns, maybe venturing out to a neighboring city for a special show from time to time. This Blog is all about taking the Fan experience on the Road and seeing Live Music in 4 different Cities (3 States) in 7 days. While Tours are planned months, even years in advance, this Musical Journey came about within a few weeks. It took on a life of it's own after I simply sent out a few messages that I wanted to see some Live Music on a recent trip back East.

What Started innocently enough as 1 Concert - morphed into 4 Shows in 4 Cities in 7 Days... the following 5 posts will detail the Shows, the experiences, and the people, who shared in these great times........

The Gift of Music........

Hearing about the Brooklyn Bowl for over two Years - reading countless posts about how great the shows were there, it was only fitting that this would be the 1st stop of 4 Shows 4 Cities 7 Days.

After landing in NY and getting settled, the obvious thing for me to do was inquire with Mr. Charlie mrcharlietoldmeso.com about what shows were coming up in the tri-state area. I was expecting 2-3 shows worth checking out - but the list I got back was a bit longer....however everything after the opening line of the email I rec'd back didn't really matter - I had found the 1st show of the trip ...

"I have an extra for 7 walkers the Tuesday after memorial day if you want to go. Brooklyn Bowl".

While the last 4 shows above didn't coincide with my dates back East - I've left them in here in case you feel compelled to catch one yourself.

The night before the 7 Walkers deserves mention here as it shares in this Musical theme.... Many years ago a close friend, Matt Murphy, passed away, and left behind many crazy memories and all his worldly possessions. Included in those possessions was an acoustic yamaha guitar. Matt loved this guitar and while he never truly mastered playing it - his passion and love for music combined to deliver some great jams. At the time of Matt's passing he left behind 2 siblings, a wonderful mother. grandmother, and a niece and a nephew not quite old enough to fully appreciate Matt's zest for music. Fast forward about 19 years and that nephew all of 5 years of age in 1992 is now 24 and a very accomplished musician and a great young man.

With help from his Mother, Beth and the generosity of Bobby Q -

I traveled 3000 Miles with that acoustic guitar in tow and met Christopher in NYC for what he thought was a chance to reconnect with a friend of his late Uncle. After about an hour of talking - I excused myself and retrieved the guitar from the hostess station and walked back to where we were sitting at the Bar - I asked Christopher to check out this Guitar I had and asked his opinion - he seemed a bit perplexed but answered favorably that it was a nice guitar - with a hand on his shoulder I asked him to take a closer look and then told him - I wanted to give him the guitar, again puzzlement showed on his face, before he could gather his thoughts I told him the true history of the guitar and that was when the magic really happened -

I, actually we (Bobby, Beth and I) had honored Matt in the best way possible and shared something sacred to him with someone he would be so proud of if he could be here today. I miss Matt and his Brother Leo, but I feel blessed to still be in touch with their wonderful family.

7 Walkers at the Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn NY- 5/31/11

As I mentioned in the previous post - I'd been hearing about this great live music venue in Brooklyn for a few years and knew I'd have to experience a show there on a future visit to NY - well as fate would have it - there was a show and a ticket waiting for me on my most recent trip to NY.

Having heard of the band and a few of its members I thought I knew what to expect - boy was I surprised..... After taking a fairly effortless Subway ride down from the UWS - (Following a nice bowl of Shrimp and grits with Mike Rosen at Ditch Plains) Jimmy B and I walked thru a very cool Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and arrived at the Brooklyn bowl with plenty of time to spare. We found Charlie outside as he needed a "breath of fresh air" and the 3 of us entered the Venue and made our way up to the bar, while they offer a fine selection of Draft beers - Bourbon was on call and would be for the entire evening - at least for Mr Charlie and I. The Venue was great and so was the staff - the crowd had not arrived early and the 3 of us quickly took up position in the front row - right in front of Guitarist Papi Mali's Microphone.

As we got closer to showtime the space behind us filled in but not once throughout the show did we feel crowded or cramped.

The band took the stage and Papi started right in.....

With Billy Kruetzman on drums and Tie dyes abound, the night was sure to be flavored with many Grateful Dead Covers - something I missed when checking out the bands website and Myspace pages.

Things started to kick into high gear when the Mighty Atwater showed up.....

With Kirk Joseph, founding member of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band playing Tuba to fill in for George Porter, Jr on Bass - Naw'lins was front and center (OK maybe more like rear and to the right)......

Henry Butler was the 1st of a few special guests....

and the horn section kept the Nawlins vibe rolling along

Later in the evening a soulful Tami Lynne joind the boys onstage after I mistakenly thought she was trying to crash the space opened up when Jimmy B went to the Bar for refills.

Joan Osbourne came out next and closed the show with a few numbers - Lovelight 1 of my all time favs - was probably the highlight for me......

I will add some more links with videos as they become available but here's one to get you started and a more detailed review of the show complete with professional photos - all mine were taken with my trusty blackberry and it's whopping 3.2 mgpxl camera.

Another review with tighter pix - Jam bands review

Phish - PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel, NJ 6/1/11

When the topic turned to Phish at the 7 Walkers Show the night before - I halfheartedly sent out a text to my nephew Matt asking him if he wanted to go see Phish and cc'd two other nephews who I had a good feeling were already planning on attending... the cc recipients replied favorably, almost instantly, and show 2 started taking form. Weds was jam packed with visiting friends and catching up. After being forced to Evacuate a northbound 6 train mid station (tragic accident at 77th Station) and a quick stop on the UES I was Jersey bound and soon to be Phishin.

The drive down was easy -

after spilling half my budlight shotgun down the front of my
shirt we hooked up with Nephew #3 (JC) and his posse
and made our way into the outdoor amphitheater

- settling in under the Pavillion -

The music was great - the crowd was a bit rambunctious
at times but aside from a constant flurry of flying glowstiks -
they were pretty easy going.

The best part was hanging with the nephews

Not really that familiar with alot of Phish songs - but was
rocking and grooving to most of what they played -

Highlights were Tweezer, Suzy Greenburg, and No Quarter,
a kicking cover of the Led Zeppelin song.

Not gonna set sail on any mutli city Phish Voyage but
wouldn't be opposed to catching another show sometime
in the near future.

Paul Simon - Webster Hall, NYC - 6/6/11

At 12:59pm I was resolved to have a quiet evening in, with the Rent's and prepare for the cross country flight the next day.

About an hour later I was calculating a few scenarios in my head of how I could venture into the City, catch a Show on the Lower East side, and then return to LI in order to catch said flight in the morning.

1 thing kept popping up - Paul Simon only 1000 people - seen him before but with only 1000 people in attendance this show promised to be special -

With a ride into the city covered, the 1st half of the trip proved effortless. When the Voyage ended in the Shadow of Katz deli
-
I got a bit emotional, Not like the famous scene in When Harry Met Sally, emotional, but close. A few mins later we were in line with our tickets in hand (Katz tix) and only a few customers away from the Holy grail..... Pastrami on Rye.

When our turn came we strode up to the counter and placed our order - my nephew, knowing the drill greased the deli man with a couple of bills in the tip jar and out came two slices of gold to sample while the sandwich was built. Side by side with the Sandwich was a handful of 1/2 sour pickles and a Potato knish - all right on the mark and the view from where we ate wasn't so bad either. (No photos of this bounty as it was consumed before it could be photographed)

The Scene out front of Webster Hall was a bit Chaotic - from the looks of it there were 4-5 things going on within 150 ft of eachother - Multiplex Movies on the Corner and a few other Venues either nextdoor to the Webster hall entrance or in between the Movies and our destination.

There was no shephard minding the sheep so we began scanning the line for familiar faces edging our way forward when alas we reached a fork in the road - at which point a heavenly voice became clear over the drone of streetlife - wawa wawa wawa on the right - Paul Simon to the left - Sidestepping a confused bunch of foreign Sheep we appeared in front of will call signs - found our letter and walked up - Tickets in hand once again, we set fourth out of East Village into the Mecca of Good Stuff: Small Venue - Big Artist. (editors note: Big in Stature)

Having friends in high places is helpful in times like these - without any we were happy to settle for friends in the right places and we nestled in with a group of JC's friends that were all stoked to be there.

Show started and Paul took the stage and the crowd welcomed him amply.

Wasting no time he launched into Boy in the Bubble off Graceland and took complete control. The favorites kept coming all night "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," "Kodachrome," "Mother and Child Reunion," "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes," "Late in the Evening"

Paul kept switching guitars and a few band members switched instruments or multi tasked - as in the Drummer who effortlessly switched between keeping time on the Drum set and playing acoustic guitar - with a slide so sweet it sang. one of the 2 keyboardists rotated on accordian, keys, guitar and possibly horns - a few others filled the void with the perfect touch of style.

A few minutes before the Encore shifted into high gear someone in our group threw David Byrnes name out as being scene in the VIP section. Sure enough a White haired man in a pink striped outfit took center stage and the crowd started to swell.

Byrne led a enthusiastic "Road to Nowhere" with Paul sharing Vocals and playing Harmonica. Ding Ding Ding ... we have a winner!

To complete his appearance David took the 1st verse of "You can call me Al" and it was evident it was far from "Same as it ever was" as David's Stoccato delivery put a stamp on the song and the evening - that was truly special.

Buffalo Springfield - Santa Barbara Bowl - Santa Barbara, CA - 6/07/11

Show # 4 - Buffalo Springfield was actually the 1st and only show of the 7 day run that had been planned for, and purchased tickets in advance. The dates for traveling back East were set well before the Buffalo Springfield Tour had been announced. While the LA shows at my Old Stomping Grounds, would have been nice - changing airline tix to accommodate the Tour Schedule makes an already expensive ticket out of reach.

Santa Barbara is 90mins away - but the lure of a new Venue to check out with a legendary band playing together after 40 years apart - leveled the playing field - when Itzy volunteered to do the driving - I was ready to sign on the dotted line and pulled the trigger on a pair of tickets.

The drive up was the perfect appetizer for the feast we were about to enjoy. Hugging the coast for over an hour we passed several Vistas that literally make your day just by catching a glimpse of them and to be lucky enough to sit back and soak it all in was quite spectacular.

Transitioning over to the 101 fwy proved effortless and we exited at Milipas with some tacos on our mind and a recommendation from E Rock and Holly to stop at Super Rica Taquera for some down home cooking down right.

As the only place on Milipas with a line out the door we kinda knew we were in the right place - when we noticed David Crosby standing in line three groups ahead of us we truly knew we were in the right place to fuel up for the Concert (He's just out of frame in the 1st photo and waiting for the tacos at his table next to ours in the 2nd photo).

We met some great folks in line Bob and Linda, from Agora hills. - they used to stop into the taqueria whenever they made the trip up to SB.

We headed up Milipas to the Bowl to take up our position. Not sure if it was the Jet lag, or the effects of the self inflicted taco coma that was compounding things - but there's a hell of a lot of walking at the SB Bowl - maybe I'm spoiled taking the Bus to the Hollywood Bowl - but I think a tow rope would help matters greatly in SB, anyway I digress but thought the excessive walking should be noted.

As Gillian Welch finished up her last few songs we took our seats near the top of the Bowl -
Section C (approx 240 ft from the stage) nestled in between a bunch of folks who were probably about 18 when Buffalo Springfield last toured, we found our pocket. The saying "There's not a bad seat in the house" gets tossed around alot - I think it really rings true about the SB Bowl. The elevated seats did gives us the best pre-show view in the house with a sliver of the Pacific Ocean visible above the treeline.

The band decided they would wait until sunset to take the stage. And once they did it was like taking a trip back in time, with one catch - we were all older. The Music was pure 1968 - the Venue timeless. But the Fans, had Matured.

As someone with an appreciation for a pretty wide spectrum of music, covering some vintage genres, Blues, Jazz and Bluegrass.... I am usually one of the older folks in the crowd, not the oldest but definitely not the youngest. Well at Buffalo Springfield I was the youngest, and while I greatly appreciated everyone's politeness and respect for the performers I think this was the one variable that kept the night on a mellower groove than the Bands previous shows at the Wiltern, that I heard rave reviews about.

The setlist was very similar if not the same as they were doing earlier on the tour leading up to Bonnaroo.

Looking back, I would have loved to hear "Sit down I think I love you" if not from the stage, I might have settled on hearing it from the milf sitting next to me but alas I had to make do with the songs they were singing and the bearded Itzy that was my travelin' companion on this trip. Itzy rallied like a tramp (had a mental typo at 3:33am) I meant to type Itzy rallied like a Champ and heeded my text to meet me in the aisle it was time to upgrade.

With only 3 songs to go we charged into section H (approximately 135 ft from the stage) and found a few seats on the aisle. Fortunately I found the one guy in the whole place who was rocking out and having as much fun as I was dancing and grooving to the band. I salute you Bob C., you helped me to close out my - 4 Shows in 4 Cities in 7 days tour with an exclamation point. Your exuberance was the perfect cap to a fine but mellow evening - I hope we have the opportunity to catch more shows together in the future, be it back at the SB Bowl or some other Venue near or far.

To everyone else who shared in this brief but mighty tour, Christopher H., Charlie, Jimmy B, Zach, Matty Mateo, Jon, Mindy, Cindy, Chris, Elliott, Bruce, Jon's Crew at Webster hall and the dude that tipped him off to tix, Itzy, Bob & Linda, David Crosby and the crew at Superica Taquera (while I'm giving shout outs for food - Katz Deli in NYC and Blue Ribbon BBQ- which I didn't get to try but have heard great things from so many peeps I will mention it here) Thank you!!! Live Music is the drug I seek more than any other and I have a feeling you're addicted too.

Peace out and let me know if you need a plus 1......

Oh yea if you want to read someone else's take on the Buffalo Springfield show click here - the writer is a bit verbose and the review is lacking photos, but he does give another perspective and confirms some of my thoughts as well.
